Gas Safe Register release the Decade Review 2017

The Decade Review is an independent study of the changes and advancements in the UK's gas industry during the past 10 years, as well as a look ahead at what's to come - from the point of view of those who work within the industry.

As the official register of gas engineers who are qualified to work safely and legally on boilers, fires, cookers and all other gas appliances, Gas Safe Register also aims to improve and raise awareness of gas safety for home owners/occupants and gas engineers alike. A national investigations team protects the public from unsafe work with regular inspections of registered engineers, tracking down illegal gas workers and investigating reports of unsafe gas work.

Many engineers view Gas Safe Register and manufacturers as having the most influence within the gas industry and would like to see Gas Safe Register take up more of a leadership role on their behalf. Restricting the sale of gas appliances to registered engineers dominated the responses to areas where engineers would like Gas Safe Register to become involved and is an issue many gas engineers have long felt strongly about. It is an industry problem, evidenced by the significant difference between the number of boilers sold in the UK and the far fewer notified under Building Regulations. The smaller the company, the more likely they are to want this: 78 per cent of sole traders think it’s an issue, compared with 53 per cent of those working for companies with more than 20 employees. However, restricting trade sales is not something that Gas Safe Register or HSE could enforce within their remits.

The overwhelming majority of gas engineers feel that the industry has become safer since they have been working in it; an average of 72 per cent across all ages have seen an improvement compared with 56 per cent who think the gas industry has improved more generally. However, some respondents said they believe many consumers choose their engineer based on recommendation rather than check with Gas Safe Register.

While awareness of the registration body itself was generally perceived to have improved over the past decade, some discussed a need to continue raising awareness of the Gas Safe Register brand with householders, along with the need to have their gas appliances maintained and serviced annually.

The full Decade Review has been made available on the Gas Safe Register website.
